| Keep it Working!
Here are some things you can do to keep you
network running smoothly:
Viruses
- Purchase and install one of these
popular anti-virus programs:
Symantec Norton Anti-Virus,
Trend
Micro PC-cillin, McAfee
VirusScan
- Make sure that the software is receiving
virus definition updates. This should be automatic, but it is a good
idea to keep an eye on it. Virus definition lists are usually updated
weekly.
Spyware
- Download the following anti-spyware
software and learn how to use it to scan and remove spyware:
Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot-S&D.
Make sure to run regular scans of your
computer
- Do not download and install free software
unless you know exactly what it is for. Many of the free applications
that you can download, like web browser enhancements, are actually
just spyware in disguise. Once these programs are on your computer,
they will begin compromising your privacy and causing your PC to run
poorly.
Software Updates
- Keep all of your software up to date.
Software manufacturers will often release updates to their
applications, usually to add functionality or to patch security
vulnerabilities. This is especially true with the operating systems,
like Microsoft Windows. Check periodically for updates (for your
operating system, check weekly.)
- On Windows machines, click on the
Windows Update link on your Start Menu. This will take you to the
Windows update site. Download and install all critical updates and hot
fixes. Do not install any of the hardware drivers from Microsoft; it
is better to go to the hardware manufacturer's site directly for
updates.
